I do not quite remember - I took this picture about a year and a half ago in Musei Capitolini - but the smile seems to indicate it is Etruscan. Their statues always seem to have that strange mocking smile like they know something of a joke and aren-t sharing...
The Etruscans were my speciality in university and I am still exceedingly fond of them. Their statues do often have this special smile but they rarely used stone in temple carvings, at least that is my understanding from what has been found. The temple of Capitoline Jupiter (like so many other things in Rome) dates back to the Etruscan kings of Rome so it is possible that there might be some connection there or that later sculpture from the area may have reckoned back to that style.
The secret is in the egg. They are often seen smiling at eggs or while holding eggs in the funeral paintings. The secret is in the egg.

I've got to ask, is that Etruscan?

A smile as enigmatic at the Mona Lisa. Whatever is he thinking about?
